The use of conventional surface temperature data for the monitoring of climate variability and change presents a major challenge. Meaningful analysis is only possible with consistent station records spanning many years, and networks which are sufficiently dense to sample the variability of interest (Karl et al. 1994; Weber and Madden 1995).
